Commercial and Government Application
As a primary element of modern commercial and institutional building design, large amounts of glass create aesthetic value but also inherent risk. The laminates most commonly recommended are:
- Clear/8, 12 or 15 Mil
- Silver/12 Mil
- Bronze 35/10 Mil
- Bronze 50/10 Mil
- Matte/12 Mil
Residential Application
Modern homes in countries with seasonal changes make use of thermal window systems, patio doors and "daylight" basements. The laminates most commonly recommended for doors, side-lites, ground floor and basement windows are:
- Clear/8, 12 or 15 Mil
- Silver/12 Mil
- Bronze 35/10 Mil
- Bronze 50/10 Mil
- Matte/12 Mil
If the house has a second floor, the following laminates are recommended:
- Clear/ 4 or 7 Mil
- Silver/4 Mil
- Bronze 35/6 Mil
- Bronze 50/5 Mil
- Bronze 70 UV/6 Mil
NOTE: For thermal windows, insulated glass units (IGU), recommend reflective, not bronze laminate, in order to avoid thermal breakage. Reflective is often most appreciated on windows facing south or west.
Auto Glass Application
The laminates most often recommended for auto glass are:
- Clear/8 Mil
- Silver/9 Mil
- Bronze 50/10 Mil
NOTE: In some jurisdictions the use of Silver or Bronze laminate on auto glass is illegal
- Clear/12 or 15 Mil (can be recommended for police vehicles, security vehicles, diplomat and VIP vehicles, etc. If a privacy tint is requested this can be applied over the security laminate).
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that most auto glass is only 1/8" thick. Even when 15 Mil Clear security window laminate is applied, it is not bullet resistant.
Security laminate on auto glass provides excellent protection from outside attack with blunt objects, e.g., tire irons, baseball bats, hammers, rocks, etc. It is an effective first line of defense against auto theft or the objects from inside a vehicle if an attempt is made to smash a window.

Solar control layers are chosen for reasons of privacy. However, they are primarily used for reducing heat increase, by lowering the solar energy passing through the windows. They work by either reflecting solar energy or by absorbing it in the window and laminate.
As the glass warms, it expands. If the glass expansion is uneven or restricted, stress builds up and in extreme cases the glass may break. For this reason there are restrictions on some combinations of window and laminate applications. As an aid for proper installation, please refer to the Laminate-to-Glass Application Chart or ask your consultant.back to top
